About the Uganda SPCA

The Uganda SPCA was founded in 1997 and was the first and only animal welfare organization in Uganda for many years. We started out with one volunteer part-time vet who did spay/neuter surgeries in Kampala and Entebbe. After about one year, we hired a part-time vet who traveled by boda boda or taxi to pick up and treat injured animals. We had a few foster homes that could take in animals during recovery or those who just needed to get off the street. We also held Humane Education classes at schools in Kampala and trained teachers to carry on with the sessions.

In 2000, we opened the Kamwokya Animal Centre. It had a library with many books about animals, where local kids from the surrounding slum area were free to come in and read, draw, watch animal-themed videos, and learn. It had a surgery theatre for spay/neuter and other care (also very popular with local kids, who could watch the vet at work).

In 2006, we opened The Haven, Uganda's first animal shelter!
